The fate of the St. Louis Cardinals’ season could hang in the balance on Monday as superstar Albert Pujols will undergo testing on a wrist that the team hopes is only sprained.
Pujols collided with Royals runner Wilson Betemit at first base on Sunday while trying to reach an errant throw by rookie second baseman Pete Kozma. Pujols left the game after writhing on the ground in pain. The Cardinals said the initial diagnosis is a sprained wrist. Pujols was holding the wrist stable as he walked off the field with trainer Greg Hauck. He is also experiencing some soreness in his left shoulder, but the wrist injury is the greater concern at this point. General manager John Mozeliak said on Sunday afternoon that Pujols underwent an X-ray as part of his initial examination, and that no broken bones were revealed at that time.
“The whole stadium was silent,” Cardinals shortstop Ryan Theriot said of the injury. “This is one of the greatest players of all time.”
Pujols started the season slowly, some thought because of impending free agency being a distraction. But he had taken off of late, hitting .317 with eight home runs and 14 RBI in June. Before the injury on Sunday he was 3-for-3 with his 17th home run. Since June 2 he is 20-for-59 (.339) with a .420 OBP. St. Louis enters play Monday tied for the NL Central lead even though it has used the disabled list 13 times and has seven players currently on the DL, including two with hand or wrist injuries. If Pujols is ruled out for a while, manager Tony La Russa likely will move Lance Berkman from right field to first base. Pujols has never played fewer than 148 games in a season since arriving in the majors and St. Louis in 2001.
St. Louis is off until Tuesday when it opens a big series with the NL East-leading Philadelphia Phillies.
